a guide to using our products to treat acne-prone skin

Breakout and blemish-prone skin often requires some extra TLC - TREATMENT, love, and care. Today, we're talking about how to use cocokind if you deal with acne. We'll walk you through each step, and why each of the following products and their all-natural ingredients help you achieve healthy skin while managing breakouts. Let's get right into it!

Step 1) Deeply cleanse.

Use our Facial Cleansing Oil to remove makeup and dirt from the skin. When you're breaking out, it's especially important to clean your face! At night, there really shouldn't be any excuses. Make sure your face is clean of dirt and makeup before heading to bed. Leaving your face unchecked before sleeping can clog your pores and cause unnecessary irritation that will undoubtedly worsen acne.

How do we cleanse when we're breaking out? We love putting one pump of the cleansing oil onto a cotton pad and adding 1-2 sprays of rosewater to the pad, and using the combination to remove makeup. Wipe all over your face (gently!) until nothing else comes onto the cotton pad. That's when you'll know you've gotten all impurities, excess oil, and makeup off of your skin! Not only does this help remove dirt and makeup, letting your skin breathe, but it also helps preserve the good oils on your face.

Step 2) Always follow up with toner.

Our toners are acidic, which helps double cleanse your face AND restore your skin’s healthy acid mantle.

Acid what? Your skin’s acid mantle is the thin film on the skin’s surface that helps act as a barrier against bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. It’s important to maintain the pH level of the acid mantle and to avoid stripping down this protective layer.

Which Toner to Use?

Both of our toners are good for soothing breakouts, but the Raspberry Vinegar Toner is the best option for heavier breakouts (aka when you need something strong AF). The Raspberry Vinegar Toner has a lower pH at 3.5 (vs. 5.5-6 for the Rosewater Toner). The acidity of the toner makes it an anti-bacterial, pore-cleansing treatment for blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and other blemishes. If you are prone to severe acne or more oily skin, this toner can help reduce your pH levels to limit excess oil production.

How to use? Post-cleansing, spray this toner 1-2x onto a cotton pad. Gently dab all over face, or on acne-prone areas to disinfect and deeply cleanse. Note that this toner is definitely stronger and more acidic than the Rosewater Toner, so we recommend using it at max 2x a day.

Another tip for people dealing with body acne is to spray the Raspberry Vinegar Toner on your body breakouts post-showering (and drying off).

Our Rosewater Toner has a higher pH of about 5.5, which is the average pH of healthy skin. If your pH is lower or higher than this, the Rosewater Toner helps restore it to a more natural, healthy level. This toner can be used as freely and frequently as possible, and it gently cleans your face while helping to reduce inflammation and redness.

For those of you who have extremely sensitive skin and are also breaking out, the Rosewater Toner may be a better option for you as it is gentler than the Raspberry Vinegar Toner.

**As a side note, if you follow us on Instagram, you'll know I love using the Rosewater as the final step in my cleansing process, a refresher throughout the day, a makeup setter, and as an added ingredient to our facial oils. Mixing a few sprays of the toner in with our moisturizing oils helps deliver all the nutrients to the skin's deep layers.

Step 3) Detox and exfoliate.

Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing may be our holy trinity, but detoxing and exfoliating are just as important to maintain healthy skin.

Mask Often

Our Chlorophyll Mask purifies the skin while adding essential antioxidants, improving circulation, and relieving breakouts. You’ll have less inflammation in your breakouts and a brighter complexion!

For regular cystic acne that penetrates deep under the skin, we recommend regularly detoxing with a mask to help calm, deeply cleanse, and nourish these stubborn blemishes. On weeks when you're dealing with cystic acne or a larger quantity of zits, you can use the chlorophyll mask almost every night!

To get the most out of this mask, make sure to start with a cleansed face to ensure you're only absorbing the GOOD stuff and the mask is penetrating deeply. Place one full scoop into your palm and add an equal amount of liquid. This mask was designed to be mixed with water, but can also easily be mixed with our cleansing oil, facial oils, toners, and even yogurt or coconut milk! It's all dependent on what your skin needs.

Here are a few unique ways to customize the chlorophyll mask for your breakout:

-For dryer skin, mix in 1 pump of our cleansing oil or a couple drops of our chia oil

-For oily skin, mix in 2-3 sprays of our Rosewater Toner or Raspberry Vinegar Toner

-For deeper breakouts, mix LESS water into the mask so that it is a thicker texture. It is useful to apply a thicker mixture to areas of your face with more breakouts. Sometimes the thicker masks can cause stiffness, so don't hesitate to add in a few drops of oils to make it more comfortable!

-For areas without breakouts, you can always add more water to dilute the mask and make it thinner.

Whatever you choose, leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes, and simply rinse off with warm water to remove. After you wash the mask, be sure to follow it up with one of our toners!

Our Sea Moss Exfoliator is gentle enough to be used 2-3 times a week, and is effective without being irritating. Dead skin cells build on the skin’s surface over time, which can clog pores or cause excess oil production, leading to acne. Exfoliation is the key to cleansing out those dead cells, pus, and dirt that are stuck right beneath or right above the skin’s surface (usually in blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules). It’s important to remove these dead cells regularly to keep your skin bright, clear, and healthy. I keep this product in my shower to remind myself to use it!

Step 4) Treat

Rather than drying out specific areas of the face (as most spot treatments do), you want to lower inflammation and melanin levels while increasing antioxidant levels of the infected area. Our Turmeric Spot Treatment is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal. While killing bacteria in the acne topically, it is also working to reduce inflammation. Turmeric contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant component called curcumin, which plays a big role in reducing excess production of melanin. Melanin is what can give damaged skin its darkened complexion (aka hyperpigmentation or “scars”). Basically, it's NOT something we want an excess of.

Here's how to get the most out of your spot treatment: start by cleansing the skin to assure that the treatment can fully and effectively absorb into the skin. Apply the treatment stick to blemishes, breakouts, or areas with uneven pigment, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. To remove, simply wipe off with a damp cotton pad (you can spray the toner on a cotton pad). This spot treatment is gentle enough that you can use it as frequently as you desire!

Can you sleep with it overnight? Yup! And this is especially helpful for larger breakouts or more stubborn scars/hyperpigmentation. Allowing the stick's antibacterial properties to absorb into your skin overnight will be especially helpful for areas that need some extra turmeric time. While the turmeric stick won't stain your skin, it will stain clothing and other fabrics (like your pillowcases), so plan accordingly. Lay a towel over your pillow cases!

Another helpful tip is that it's totally ok and beneficial to wear the Turmeric Stick under the Chlorophyll Mask! You can apply the Turmeric Stick to your spots, and then apply a thin layer of Chlorophyll Mask all over your face. Wash both off after at least 20 minutes and follow-up with toner on a cotton pad to make sure all the Turmeric has been removed.

Step 5) Moisturize!

Contrary to what many think, drying out your acne is not useful. Think about the evolution of your pimples; the skin’s natural way of healing an infection (aka, your blemish) is to release the infection through the skin’s surface. Drying out the infection rather than allowing it to exit the skin is more harmful than beneficial, and can actually lead to a prolonged recovery. By drying out the irritated spot, you’re covering up the infection with dead skin cells that prevent it from healing naturally–not to mention, excessively dried out skin can flake off and scar, which we want to avoid.

Let your skin do its natural regenerative thing! This will help diminish the breakouts faster, avoid scarring, and repair texture and tone. For deep and healthy moisturizing, we recommend our Chia Facial Oil or Facial Repair Oil. For lighter moisturizing or for those that are very new to oils, we recommend our Raspberry Jasmine All-Over Oil! Use one of these products day and night on a freshly cleansed and toned face to aid in the healing process.

Summing it up

The general steps are: Cleanse, Tone, Exfoliate and Mask, Treat, and Moisturize! Everyone's skin is different, so we always recommend listening to your skin and developing your own specific routine. Since we know it can be quite complicated, however, I wanted to share with you a recommended AM and PM routine if you are breaking out! Again, feel free to listen to your skin and add or delete as necessary.

  1. Rinse your face with cold water
  2. Spray our Rosewater Toner on a cotton pad and wipe all over face
  3. Apply our Raspberry Jasmine All-Over Oil, Chia Oil, or Facial Repair Oil as a moisturizer
  4. Wear sunscreen

  1. Apply our cleansing oil to a cotton pad, add 1-2 sprays of our Rosewater Toner, and wipe all over face to remove makeup. OR, alternatively, you can remove your makeup using the cleansing oil and use the Sea Moss Exfoliator to cleanse and remove build up.
  2. Use our Turmeric Spot Treatment or Chlorophyll Mask (or both!)
  3. Rinse off the mask or wipe off the Turmeric stick using a cotton pad + toner combination.
  4. Tone using our Raspberry Vinegar Toner. This time, make sure nothing else comes off on the pad! Your face should be totally clean and free of residue after this step.
  5. Moisturize using our Raspberry Jasmine Oil, Chia Oil, or Facial Repair Oil.

Again - everyone's skincare needs are unique. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to use our products, and you don't need to use all of them to benefit from the natural ingredients! We hope this helps and we're always around to answer specific skincare questions at info@cocokind.com!
