The Case for Toners: Why You Should Never Skin This Step
How to Use a Toner?
After cleansing and before applying moisturizer, spray one to two times onto a cotton pad and gently pad all over face. We also love spraying throughout the day as a pick-me-up!
Why Should I Tone?
We always talk about how our go-to skincare steps are 1) Cleanse, 2) Tone, and 3) Moisturize. Today, we wanted to hone in on that second step: toning. Toning is probably the most taken for granted step in our skincare routines; and as such, we often hear people skipping it all together.
Do we really need to use a toner? Some of you may be wondering what the benefits and purpose of a toner are. Today we’ll break down how toners work, what they can do for our skin, and why we can’t stop spritzing in the office.
1) It Completes the Cleansing Step
Toners act as an extra cleansing step by removing left over impurities from environmental pollutants or make up. You might be surprised at how much is STILL left on your face even after you cleanse. Sometimes, you may need to pull off some residue oil from our cleansing oil – it’s best to remove everything before moisturizing. You’ll want to have a clean slate before you moisturize! Using a toner will act as an extra step to ensure a squeaky, clean face…and you’ll actually see the remaining dirt on your cotton pad.
2) Toning Re-balances pH Levels
Cleansing your skin or day-to-day damage can alter your skin’s pH levels. Imbalanced pH levels can cause excess oil production or clogged pores. Using a toner will help restore your skin back to its pH levels. Astringent properties like those found in our Raspberry Vinegar Toner, will reduce the over production of oil and sebum which can often lead to blackheads, whiteheads, or blemishes. Additionally, the acidity in toners can also prevent bacteria growth in our pores.
For those of you with oily or blemish-prone skin, you’ll especially want to balance your pH levels before moisturizing.
3) It Hydrates And Increases Ability to Absorb Moisturizers
Toners are an easy way to deliver instant hydration and nutrients to the skin, keeping it youthful, smoother, and rejuvenated. Every day, we are exposed to different environmental damages such as extreme weather, dust, harsh wind, etc. All of these factors can easily irritate and dry our skin. Keeping a bottle on hand during travel or work is a life-saver for dry skin! Our Rosewater Facial Toner is a great all day, every day spray to help smooth and calm skin. Containing anti-inflammatory properties, it works to reduce dryness while keeping skin soft and supple. Not to mention, using a toner allows your skin to better absorb facial oils in the next step -> moisturizing.
4) Toners Are Multipurpose
Not only should you use toners after cleansing and before moisturizing, but our toners are also multipurpose. You can use either of our toners to set your makeup or deliver a nice mid-day refresh for your skin!
Which Should I Choose?
It’s important to note that both of our toners are suitable for sensitive skin types.
However, we recommend the raspberry vinegar for oily or blemish-prone skin. This vinegar toner is stronger in acidity, making it better for dealing with clogged or oily skin, blackheads, blemishes etc.
The rosewater toner is more all purpose, all skin types, and all the time. For those of us with dryer skin, we’d recommend the rosewater toner over the vinegar.
There is also no harm in spraying both on a cotton pad and if you just can’t choose!
Toning is an essential step to our skincare, and we swear by it at least twice a day. If you’re using a chemical-free toner based on real ingredients, the benefits are too great to be ignored. Ultimately, toning is a wonderful tool to refresh, hydrate, balance, AND clean your skin.
We hope this cleared up any mystifying questions you had about toners! As always, feel free to leave us any comments or questions (firstname.lastname@example.org).
