my routine already works - why do I need boosters?

So, you’ve got your skincare routine handled. You double cleanse every night, follow up with toner, and moisturize to your heart’s content. And you never forget the neck! You always drink enough water and you always get enough sleep. You’re dedicated, consistent, and basically a skincare superhero.

If your skincare routine is already working, why add anything to it? As the old adage goes, don’t try to fix what’s not broken - but what if you’re not trying to fix a broken routine, but instead, elevate and enhance it?

The right products can work as “boosters” in your routine, supporting your other products and bringing your skin to a whole new level of clear, bright, and glowing. Read on for a few of our favorites.

vitamin c serums

Vitamin C does a lot more than look cute - it happens to be a powerful antioxidant. As you may know, antioxidants protect the skin against oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals.

Free radicals are reactive molecules with unpaired electrons that form as a result of exposure to pollution, UV rays, and the like. They attack collagen and other compounds in the skin, damaging its elasticity, and often causing premature fine lines and signs of aging. Potent antioxidants like vitamin C lend additional electrons to free radicals, effectively neutralizing them.

That’s all well and good, but where does this whole “booster” concept come into play?

Well, the effectiveness of any product that promises to increase your skin’s suppleness (hello chia facial oil!) or support healthy aging can be boosted by an antioxidant vitamin C serum. Essentially, while antioxidants protect the collagen in your skin from free radical damage, they protect the suppleness and firmness of your skin. Without antioxidant protection, free radical damage could potentially undo all of the firming, suppleness-increasing work that your oils and moisturizers do.

Antioxidants also work to help prevent hyperpigmentation caused by free radical damage. No matter how frequently you turmeric-and-mask, free radicals can still negatively impact your skin tone, leaving it discolored or uneven. Antioxidants like vitamin C can help support your tone-improving products (like the turmeric spot treatment), by keeping dark spots from getting darker, and allowing brightening products to actually improve and visibly even out your skin tone over time (although you should still also always wear sunscreen!). And bonus - vitamin C does plenty to brighten your skin on its own.

Our favorite source of antioxidant vitamin C is, of course, our new vitamin C serum with sea grape caviar. Along with providing potent protection against oxidative stress, our serum also uses sea grape caviar to deeply hydrate, aloe vera to soothe, and hyaluronic acid to moisturize skin immediately, and smooth and soften it over time.

essences

As k-beauty fans (and cocokind fans!) know, essences improve absorption of any products that you use after. They’re made of smaller molecules than moisturizers or oils, which enables them to penetrate the top layer of your skin. As they do so, they create a pathway that your serums, moisturizers, or oils are then able to follow, allowing them to sink in more deeply than they would on their own.

An essence is perhaps the most perfect example of a booster, because it quite literally enhances the performance of any product you use after. Your serums are able to deliver their actives deeper, and thus, more potently, and your moisturizers are able to hydrate your skin more intensely.

And that’s not all they do - essences are also usually packed with their own actives. For example, our glow essence uses sea grape caviar to bolster hydration levels, blue algae extract to smooth the skin’s appearance, and sea buckthorn extract to soften and regenerate skin. We recommend using our essence and serum together, if you’re looking to achieve a bright, glowing, supple complexion (who isn’t?).

So, are you ready to give your skincare routine a boost?
