Five Bad Skincare Habits You Need to Quit!

Today we are talking about bad habits and skincare no-no’s. Like how we forget to take our make-up off before going to bed? Sound familiar? We’ve all been guilty at some point, but good skincare habits = healthier skin!

Here is our top five:

  1. Not Removing Your Make-Up Before Entering The Steam Room

It’s recommended to shower and remove any make-up from your skin prior to entering the sauna or steam room. The benefits of both these activities include stimulating circulation and sweating, which can unclog your pores and give you that glowing skin. Wearing make-up pretty much defeats the purpose of this natural facial.  The heat and sweat will melt your make-up off and when make-up gets pushed deeper into your pores, it makes them appear enlarged, and can lead to inflammation! NOW who’s up for going make-up free to the spa?  On that note, the same should apply for working out or going to bed.

  1. Tanning To Cover Up Acne.

The worst skincare advice we’ve heard is to go tanning to cover up acne. The theory is that darkening the skin around acne would hide the scarring and make it less obvious,  but tanning is one of the WORST things you can do for any type of scarring! Scar tissue, unlike normal tissue is not as protected against UV rays which means that there is a high likelihood that you will end up burning your scar. Ultimately, prolonged sun exposure leads to darkened scars that stay around longer. Instead, focus on protecting your acne scars by wearing sunscreen and keeping the affected areas free from bacteria and sweat.

  1. Wearing Expired Make-Up

Cosmetics trap a lot of bacteria due to the constant re-application of the products and contact with our skin. Wearing old make-up can lead to skin irritations, breakouts, infections and even acne! Expired make-up harbors bacteria and when these react with our skin, it can lead to inflammation, dermatitis and redness. As a rule of thumb, mascara should be replaced every three months, eyeliner, eye shadow, and foundation every six months or so. Swap lipsticks out every year or so and don’t forget to clean your make-up brushes frequently!

  1. Toothpaste To Treat Pimples

This is a commonly heard remedy that does not actually work. Toothpaste consists of harmful ingredients such as peroxide, fragrances, and alcohol that end up drying out and irritating the skin, which can result in peeling and redness! We love using our turmeric spot treatment whenever we are breaking out.

  1. Using Coffee Grounds As A Facial Exfoliant

Coffee scrubs are more suited to use on the body since the skin there is tougher, but not on the face. The skin on the body is thicker and can handle the level of abrasion and stimulation brought on by exfoliating. However, the skin on our face is much more delicate and coffee grounds have jagged edges that will scratch and cause micro tears. This will damage your skin over time. Our favorite is the organic sea moss exfoliator, it delivers key nutrients to the skin whilst gently exfoliating the skin.
